Ashley Ellerin Slaying: DNA evidence finds link

DNA evidence has linked an air conditioning repairman to the stabbing deaths of three women, including a former girlfriend of actor Ashton Kutcher, police said Friday.

Michael Gargiulo, 32, of Santa Monica has been in custody since July for a separate knife attack and could face murder charges as soon as next week, police said.

Santa Monica police Lt. Darrell Lowe said DNA collected from a crime scene last spring helped link Gargiulo to the stabbing deaths of women from Los Angeles, suburban Chicago and Monterey Park.

One of the cases involves 22-year-old Ashley Ellerin, Kutcher's former girlfriend, who was found dead in February 2001 in her Hollywood Hills home.

Kutcher, who starred in the television series "That '70s Show" and is married to actress Demi Moore, told police he went to pick up the fashion student-model for a post-Grammy Awards party, but she did not answer the door. He checked a back window and spotted what he thought were red wine stains on the carpet and then left. Her body was discovered the next day by a friend

Sarah Palin emerges as potential McCain VP

The Republican presidential nominee has kept his selection a closely guarded secret, and it's anything but certain who'll he will pick. McCain is slated to announce his running mate at noon Eastern time in Dayton, Ohio, just hours after the end of the Democratic convention.

McCain, R-Ariz., hopes to turn the media focus away from Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama and generate momentum heading into the GOP convention that starts Monday in St. Paul, Minn.  There's a chance the convention could be postponed, however, if Tropical Storm Gustav turns into a hurricane and strikes sarah_palinthe Gulf Coast.                                                                  Earlier Friday, NBC and other media outlets reported that Pawlenty and Romney were out of the running. One news report said Palin left Alaska on an early-morning flight en route to Dayton, but other reports were contradictory. Palin, 44, is a reform-minded governor in Alaska who's challenged the party's old guard, attacked pork-barrel spending and taken a keen interest in energy and environmental issues. A former Miss Alaska runnerup, Palin hold a degree in journalism and has five children, including one with Down Syndrome.

If Palin is selected, it could indicate a strategy on McCain's part to siphon off women voters disaffected by Sen. Hillary Clinton's loss in the Democratic primaries to Obama, D-Ill.

Until McCain makes his pick, however, Romney, Pawlenty and others cannot be ruled out. Sen. Joe Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, also claimed he would not be Obama's choice several days before his selection.

During the vice presidential selection process, campaigns often use feints and misdirection to stoke interest in a candidate's selection....Read the full breaking news on Market Watch

Movie review : Rock On

The best thing about Rock On is that it's not about the music. So even if you've never ever been to a concert or harbored fantasies of being a rock star, you are immediately swept into this story of four friends and their rock band called Magic.
Rock On is about their relationships, their unfulfilled dreams and their gnawing grief that lifeRockon has passed them by. The music is a metaphor.
Follow your bliss, writer-director Abhishek Kapoor tells us in a film that is sometimes derivative and often predictable but also so engaging and exhilarating that by the climactic concert you are blinking back tears and pumping your fist in the air.
What connects here are the details. Abhishek sets up his characters with a few deft strokes. So, Farhan Akhtar is Adi, former lead singer and current investment banker who mouths lines like: Your wealth is in safe hands, Jai Shri Krishna.

Arjun Rampal is Jo, former lead guitarist, now mostly unemployed and so haunted by his past that he seems hollow. Purab Kholi is KD, once a kick-ass drummer and now sober Gujarati boy in pinstripes, selling jewelry. And Luke Kenny is Rob, the keyboard player, who now grits his teeth and creates music with Anu Mallik. Each one seethes with a quiet frustration, desperately aware that he has compromised with life. Adi's wife, hoping to bring some cheer into her husband's mechanical existence, brings the friends together again. Rock On suffers from a Dil Chahta Hai hangover - here too friends are driven apart and then reunited.  Read More

Movie Review : Chamku

Chamku begins with scenes of bucolic bliss in Bihar. A farmer and his family are scampering in the swaying fields. It's so pretty that you know it's doomed.  Sure enough, before you know it, the father is shot dead and the son gravely wounded. He is rescued by a ChamkuNaxalite leader, who reads Pushkin and plans operation with equal dexterity. The leader christens the little boy Chamku and rears him to be a killer, played by Bobby Deol.  When the leader is killed, an intelligent agency officer makes a deal with Chamku: he now becomes a state sponsored assassin.

Until this point, Chamku is ferociously effective. Director Kabir Kaushik who earlier made the gritty eastern UP-police drama Seher, orchestrates the tragedy with an unflinching eye. He has a feel for the rhythms and textures of the badlands. But the film starts faltering when the action moves to Mumbai.

Suddenly we see Chamku staring moodily at the sea wearing designer goggles, leather pants and a spiffy jacket. He also falls in love with a school teacher who channeling Sushmita Sen from Main Hoon Na, dresses exclusively in chiffon saris and sexy blouses.
Of course Chamku now wants to quit the killing fields but the only exit available is death.

Like in Seher, Kaushik is trying to create a damning portrait of the system. Everyone, from the minister to Chamku, is a pawn in this vast network of money and power. Bobby Deol as a Naxalite requires serious suspension of disbelief but with impassive eyes and grim mouth, he strives hard to make it convincing. But both Kaushik and Deol are hobbled by the screenplay. The plot movement is jerky, the characters are half-baked and the pace is slowed down by unnecessary songs, including an inexplicable item number.
Beyond a point, the incessant violence becomes predictable and tiresome. Chamku had the potential to be an insightful movie about a brutal system but the film manages to be only intermittently engaging. This is strictly average fare.

Kalpana Morparia to join JP Morgan

Kalkalpanapana Morparia has decided to end her 33-year-old association with ICICI Bank, the country’s second largest lender, and is set to join JP Morgan. In a statement this evening, ICICI Bank said Morparia, who was the group’s vice-chair for insurance, securities and asset management and the chief strategy and communications officer, is leaving to pursue other opportunities. A news agency said Morparia will head JP Morgan’s India operations.

“I will miss ICICI Bank. It is a part of me and I have worked here for 33 years. But we must move on,” Morparia told Business Standard.

She added: “The times are not really that challenging, on the contrary, they are very exciting.” JP Morgan could not be reached for comment.

In 1975, Morparia started her career in the legal department of ICICI, the erstwhile development finance institution, and rose to become a director on the company’s board in 2001. She continued as a wholetime director till the last year and was the bank’s joint managing director.

In her present role, which she assumed in May 2007, Morparia was to head the group’s holding company that has not taken off so far. The holding company was to have the asset management company and the insurance ventures under its ambit, but it first ran into trouble with the Foreign Investment Promotion Board and subsequently with the central bank.

Obama Prepares For Democratic Convention Finale

Presidenobama-01tial hopeful Barack Obama will deliver the biggest speech of his life tonight, as he makes history by accepting the Democratic Party's nomination to become the first African American candidate for president on a major party ticket. 45 years to the day after Martin Luther King Jr. declared, "I Have a Dream," Obama will be the focus of an audience of 75,000 in Denver and millions around the world.
The Illinois Senator will cap his party's 4-day convention, a gathering that stressed unity, change, and hope for the future - all key tenants of Obama's campaign. There was some concern at the convention regarding the lingering divisions in the Democratic Party following the defeat of Hillary Clinton in the primary by Barack Obama. However, the New York Senator made her support for Obama clear, erasing much of the tension Tuesday.
Wednesday evening, with the help of a plea from his former rival, Barack Obama officially clinched the Democratic presidential nomination.
Former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., took to the floor of the Democratic National Convention and offered a motion to nominate Obama by acclamation, ending a traditional roll call of states that started earlier in the afternoon.
"With eyes firmly fixed on the future, in the spirit of unity, with the goal of victory, with faith in our party and our country, lets declare together with one voice, right here, right now that Barack Obama is our candidate and he will be our president," Clinton said.

5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Of Canada's Vancouver Island

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck off Canada's Pacific coast west of Vancouver Island early Thursday, said the U.S. Geological Survey.
The epicenter of the quake was located to be about 95 miles west-southwest of Port Hardy, and about 293 miles west-northwest of Vancouver, at a depth of 6.2 miles, the agency said.
Canadian authorities said that the quake struck too far off land to cause any damages or causalities, and added that it was the latest in a series of 15 coastal tremors since Monday.
"These earthquakes are too far offshore to be felt on land and too small to generate a tsunami," Natural Resources Canada said.

Trail Blazers Kevin Duckworth, Two-Time All-Star, Dies

Kevin Duckworth, 44, a two-time NBA All-Star who starred on Western Conference Championship teams in Portland in 1990 and 1992, passed away Monday evening in Gleneden Beach, Oregon.  A member of the Trail Blazers from 1986-93, the 7-footer - duckworthaffectionately known to Trail Blazers fans simply as "Duck" - also played for San Antonio, Washington, Milwaukee and the Los Angeles Clippers during his 11-year NBA career.
"Today is an extremely sad day for the Trail Blazers family," Trail Blazers President Larry Miller said. "Kevin will be remembered by fans as one of the most popular and recognizable players to ever wear the Blazers uniform, but to people who knew him, he'll be remembered as one of the warmest and biggest-hearted."

Duckworth remained in the Portland area after his playing career ended, where he was an avid fisherman & outdoorsman, and a skilled carpenter. He was on the Oregon Coast representing the Trail Blazers as a Heritage Ambassador on the team's 19-city Statewide Summer Tour. The cause of his death is unknown, and will be determined by a Lincoln County Medical Examiner. A second-round draft pick of the San Antonio Spurs out of Eastern Illinois University in 1986, Duckworth was only 14 games into his NBA career when he was acquired by the Trail Blazers from San Antonio in exchange for Walter Berry.

One season later, the 7-foot center was thrust into the spotlight because of injuries to Steve Johnson and Sam Bowie. Duckworth responded by averaging 15.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, establishing himself as a pivot presence instrumental in Portland’s emergence as one of the NBA's dominant teams. Duckworth remains the 10th leading scorer (7,188) and rebounder (3,327) in Trail Blazers history, compiling averages of 13.6 points and 6.3 rebounds in 527 games with Portland. During his tenure, Trail Blazers teams compiled a record of 356-193 (.648). In 684 career NBA games, Duckworth scored 8,085 points (11.8 ppg), grabbed 3,945 rebounds (5.8 rpg) and shot 46.8 percent from the field.

“This is a devastating loss,” said Traci Rose, Trail Blazers Vice President of Community Relations. “To this day, Duck is adored throughout this state and remains a brother to his teammates and to Trail Blazers staff. We will forever miss our beloved 00.”

'100 Things to do before you die' Co-author Dave Freeman dies at 47 in LA

freeman Dave Freeman, co-author of the travel guide 100 Things to Do Before You Die, has died at age 47 after hitting his head in a fall at his home, according to the Associated Press. Freeman died Aug. 17 after the fall at his Venice home, his father, Roy Freeman, told the Los Angeles Times on Monday.

An advertising agency executive, Freeman co-wrote the 1999 book subtitled Travel Events You Just Can’t Miss with Neil Teplica.

Freeman’s relatives said he visited about half the places on his list before he died. The book’s recommendations ranged from attending the Academy Awards to taking a voodoo pilgrimage in Haiti.

The book's recommendations ranged from the obvious — attending the Academy Awards and running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain — to the more obscure — taking a voodoo pilgrimage in Haiti and "land diving" on the Island of Vanuatu, which Freeman once called "the original bungee jumping."

It included goofy graphics with each entry, indicating that some activities were "down and dirty," and others "grandma friendly."

The success of "100 Things" inspired dozens of like-minded books, with titles such as "100 Things Project Managers Should Do Before They Die" and "100 Things Cowboys Fans Should Know and Do Before They Die."

Freeman graduated from the University of Southern California in 1983, briefly working for an ad agency in Newport Beach before moving to New York to work for Grey Advertising.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Freeman watched the second plane hit the World Trade Center from his apartment just blocks away. He moved back to Southern California to be closer to his family.

Chiranjeevi launches Prajya Rajyam party

chiranjeevi114 Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi on Tuesday launched his political party Praja Rajyam (People's Rule) and said social justice would be its goal. "It will be a democratic and secular party. It will be people's party, born from the hearts of people. It will be a party for backward classes, farmers, workers, women and youth," he said, addressing thousands gathered for the launch in Tirupati.

"The party will work for development, modernisation and industrial revolution. Its goal will be santosh and ananda (contentment and happiness) of Andhra Pradesh," he said amid loud cheers from an estimated million people gathered from across Andhra Pradesh.

Tirupathi crowded with Chiru Fans

The temple town is teeming with huge crowds, including a large number of physically challenged and women fans of the actor. Slogans of 'Jai Chiranjeeva' rent the air as the thousands of fans stepped off at the railway station and bus stops. Hotels, lodges, guest houses and function halls have been booked as well.

The railways have operated 18 special trains while state-owned Road Transport Corporation is running 1,500 buses. Thousands of private vehicles are also ferrying Chiranjeevi's fans from different parts of the state. The majority of the people have come from coastal Andhra as the actor hails from the region.

The town is decked up with huge cutouts of the actor and banners hailing his entry into politics. Hoardings showing the actor in different moods have been erected on every road.

Chiru, who turned 53 last Friday, has bid adieu to his three-decade film career and has decided to dedicate his life to serve the poor and the needy. It is in this context that he decided to launch the party on Aug 26, the birth anniversary of Mother Teresa.

Chiru's party is expected to emerge as a major political force in the state. His fans see him as the next chief minister and feel he would emerge as powerful as matinee idol NT Rama Rao, who changed the course of Andhra politics by coming to power within nine months after launching the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1982.

American Idol-DioGuardi as fourth judge

DioGuardi Grammy-Nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi has joined American Idol as a fourth judge.  She will sit alongside Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson at the judges' table and use her background as an award-winning songwriter and producer to praise or critique the wannabe hopefuls throughout the competition.  The eighth season of American Idol premieres January 2009 on FOX.

"We are turning the heat up on Idol this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges' table," said creator and executive producer Simon Fuller.  "She is a smart, sassy lady, and one of America's most successful songwriters.  We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show."

"We had originally intended for American Idol to have four judges," said executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz. "We've seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers."

Mike Darnell, President, alternative Programming of FOX, added, "For the past seven seasons, Paula has had to endure the experience of being the only woman at the judges' table.  She's been as an island of consideration and gentle criticism between Randy and Simon, offering her invaluable expertise as a performer and No. 1 artist to the thousands who have competed on American Idol.  With Kara by her side, Paula finally has some back-up and now there is going to be a lot more 'girl power' on the show."

One of the industry's most sought after songwriters and producers, DioGuardi's songs have appeared on more than 100 million records.  Her songs have been recorded by Grammy award-winning artists including Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Santana and Pink.  Scores of major recording artists including Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Pussycat Dolls, Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Natasha Bedingfield, Jewel, Ashley Tisdale, Katharine McPhee, Taylor Hicks, Bo Bice, Clay Aiken, Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff, Jessica Simpson, Kylie Minogue, Enrique Iglesias, Nick Lachey and Marc Anthony have also released DioGuardi's songs.

Movie review - Phoonk

Rajeev [Sudeep], a successful construction engineer, with a loving wife and two children, is an atheist to the core. He scowls at people who believe in the dark forces, till one day when an evil is let loose in his happy home, which threatens to destroy his family and shake up the very foundations of his convictions and beliefs.

The lead protagonist Sudeep doesn't believe in supernatural. He checks up with a psychiatrist who follows a scientific approach and passes off the haunted hangovers as some dissociative personality disorder. But the elderly deem it as eerie. After much debate over science and superstition, an exorcist is summoned who liberates the possessed from the evil forces. Phoonk follows an exactly identical outline and ends up being a regurgitated version of Bhoot with minor modifications. Ram Gopal Varma perhaps attempts to give a new discourse to the narrative by having a child possessed here.

RGV emphasises on lighting and artefacts, besides an eccentric woman [Ashwini Kalsekar], to create the right atmosphere. The performances are uniformly good. Sudeep impresses you with an excellent performance. Amruta Khanvilkar is efficient. Baby Ahsaas Channa makes a strong impression. Ashwini Kalsekar is top notch. Zakir Hussain's tantric act is superb. Ganesh Yadav lends good support. K.K. Raina and Lilette Dubey, both doctors, are competent. Kenny Desai, Anu Ansari and the actress enacting the role of Sudeep's mother are perfect.

Howard Hughes

Howard Hughes Howard Robard Hughes, Jr. (24 December 1905 – 5 April 1976) was an American aviator, industrialist, film producer/director, philanthropist, and one of the wealthiest people in the world. He gained fame in the late 1920s as a maverick film producer, making big budget and often controversial films like Hell's Angels, Scarface, and The Outlaw. As an aviator, Hughes set multiple world air-speed records (for which he won many awards, including the Congressional Gold Medal), built the Hughes H-1 Racer and H-4 "Spruce Goose" aircraft, and acquired and expanded Trans World Airlines. Despite his contributions to aeronautics and his other professional achievements, Hughes is perhaps most widely remembered for his highly-publicized descent into madness in later life. Nonetheless, Hughes' legacy is still visible through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and he remains one of the most influential aviators in American history.

Tata Indica Vista Launched

Tata Motors today launched the new generation of the country’s first and only fully indigenous car -- the Indica Vista at a function at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai. Launched first in 1998, the Indica went on to establish a leadership position in its class with category defining attributes of space, style, comfort, safety and fuel efficiency, most of which hold true even today - ten years down the line. Close to 9.1 lakh Indicas have been produced since then with over 1.127 million cars having rolled off the platform. The Indica achieved its highest sale of 144,690 nos. in its eighth year of launch in 2006-07 which is rare for any model so late in its life cycle. The car exited 2007-08 as the second largest selling model in the industry despite its product maturity and announced plans of the next generation being around the corner.

The all new Indica Vista has been given a complete makeover. A complete new skin houses an all new interior and the sculpted evolutionary, yet very contemporary body makes a bold styling statement. At nearly 3.8m length and 1.7m width, with a wheel base of 2470mm, the car has grown in size, mostly in the interior space. A new central character line on the hood, sharp crease lines on the door below the beltline, a honeycomb grille and striking petal shaped headlamps complement the trademark smiling grille and tall tail lights that are distinctive to the Indica.

The interiors have the instrument cluster now placed in the centre of the dashboard to enhance in-driving passenger involvement and improved driver visibility. A dual tone grey and beige interior with a pleasing soft feel grain structure on the top end version gives the car a premium touch. A two DIN CD System with a USB port and remote control enables music to be customised to one’s needs.

On comfort too, the Indica Vista has a number of unique, thoughtful touches. The height adjustable driver’s seat and the tilt-adjustable steering wheel enable better driving posture. Utility space in the floor console under the seat and the deep glove box, which can accommodate a laptop, give that extra space when needed. Tubeless tyres, a new twist beam suspension, gas filled shock absorbers, a sub-frame construction for enhanced transverse stiffness lead to better ride and drive comfort as well as improved handling. The body has a higher use of high strength steel panels for enhanced torsional and bending stiffness. Tailor welded blanks have been used for the first time to reduce weight. Thoughtful touches, like the rear wiper switching on in reverse when the front wiper is on, are many.

The car is powered by a range of internationally acclaimed powertrains - the new 75 bhp 1.3L Quadrajet Common Rail Diesel engine and the 65bhp, 1.2L CVCP Safire MPFI petrol engine being manufactured at the new Fiat-Tata joint venture at Ranjangaon in Maharashtra. The Quadrajet operates at 1400 bar with 4 injections per cycle and delivers a high torque of 190Nm over a flatter speed range for better city driving. The Safire has a continuous variable cam phaser (CVCP) for improved drivability and fuel economy and a drive by wire technology for accelerator pedal control. Both engines are mated to a new cable aided gearbox with twin synchronisers for precise shift feel and quality. It also has the option of the existing 1.4L turbocharged intercooled TDi engine which has been refined further and mated to a smooth shift gearbox.

The car comes with a segment best 24 months (75000 km) warranty and will be available in a range of 7 colors through 170 dealerships across the country which are progressively being renovated to wear a refreshed identity being rolled out. The car is being launched in 7 variants priced at Rs.3.49 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi for the 1.2L petrol Safire at the low end going upto Rs.4.88 lakhs ex-showroom Delhi for the top end 1.3L Quadrajet. The TDi version comes at nearly the same price as the outgoing existing Indica V2 version. The company will launch an ABS, Airbags execution in the domestic market at the time of the car’s debut in international markets.

The existing Indica will continue to exist with a rationalised portfolio - the lower versions of the 1.2L Xeta and the 1.4L naturally aspirated IDI diesel and one version each of the DICOR and TCIC diesel, the latter being available with ABS and Airbags. Between the existing Indica V2 and new Indica Vista range, customers will have a choice at every step of the Rs.2.6 lakhs – Rs.4.88 lakhs price range.

Joe Biden is Barack Obama's pick as vice presidential running mate

Barack Obama named Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware as his vice presidential running mate early Saturday, balancing his ticket with a seasoned congressional veteran well-versed in foreign policy and defense issues.

Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee. Watch the first
Obama-Biden rally live at 3pm ET on www.BarackObama.com. Spread the
word!

Obama announced the pick on his Web site with a photo of the two men and an appeal for donations. A text message went out shortly afterward that said, "Barack has chosen Senator Joe Biden to be our VP nominee."

Biden, 65, has twice sought the White House, and is a Catholic with blue-collar roots, a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as a long-winded orator.

Across more than 30 years in the Senate, he has served at various times not only as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee but also as head of the Judiciary Committee, with its jurisdiction over anti-crime legislation, Supreme Court nominees and Constitutional issues.
In selecting Biden, Obama passed over several other potential running mates, none more prominent than former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, his tenacious rival in dozens of primaries and caucuses. Read the complete story on Huffington Post.

Joe Biden: Profile

Joseph Biden, the 65-year-old Delaware senator has, by all accounts, a superlative resumé.
Biden's leadership of the foreign relations committee is expected to benefit Democrats during a presidential race that could be decided as much by Iran, Iraq and Russia as by the US.
His son is scheduled for a deployment to Iraq this year, and he has a palpable affection for Barack Obama.
Biden, first elected at the age of 30, is a demonstrably skilled debater. Washington has produced few sparkling wits, but he is one of them.

His long history in Washington also risks undermining Obama's message of "change".
Biden, who dropped out of the presidential race in Iowa in January, is of Irish Catholic heritage but is in favour of abortion rights, a key issue in US elections. He originally voted to authorise the war in Iraq, but has since become a persistent critic of the Bush administration's policies there.
Born into a working class family in Scranton, Pennsylvania on November 20 1942, Biden is not a household name but was arguably the most well-known of those being considered for the vice presidency by Obama.

Biden married Neilia Hunter in 1966, and the couple had three children. His wife and 13-month-old daughter. Naomi. died in a car accident in December 1972, shortly after he was first elected to the Senate.

His two sons, Joseph R Biden III and Robert Hunter, were seriously injured, but Biden was persuaded not to resign to look after them and was sworn into office from their bedside. Both made full recoveries.

In 1977, he married Jill Tracy Jacobs, with whom he has a daughter, Ashley. Biden is currently serving his sixth term as a member of the Democratic Party. He has served for the sixth-longest period among current senators, and is Delaware's longest-serving senato.

Common Sense (1776) - Thomas Paine

Thomas Paine was the first international revolutionary. His Common Sense (1776) was the most widely read pamphlet of the American Revolution--and his Rights of Man (1791-2), the most famous defense of the French Revolution, sent out a clarion call for revolution throughout the world. Paine paid the price for his principles: he was outlawed in Britain, narrowly escaped execution in France, and was vilified as an atheist and a Jacobin on his return to America.

Published in 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The plain language that Paine used spoke to the common people of America and was the first work to openly ask for independence from Great Britain.

The new edition of "Rights of Man, Common Sense, and Other Political Writings" which is available on Google books and is published by Oxford University press contains the complete texts of both Rights of Man and Common Sense, as well as six other powerfully political writings--American Crisis I, American Crisis XIII, Agrarian Justice, Letter to Jefferson, Letter Addressed to the Addressers on the Late Proclamation, and Dissertation on the First Principles of Government--all of which illustrate why Paine's ideas still resonate in the modern welfare states of today.

Plot of "Common Sense"
Paine begins by proposing to his readers that they have the right to question the King of England because his policies affect their lives. Paine emphasizes that people should question ideas even if they have been long accepted as true, and that the concerns of the colonies will prove to be universal concerns as they involve oppression and liberty, tyranny and freedom. He concludes by establishing that his interests have not been compromised by any political party but are only focused on a reasonable argument.

Chet Edwards vetted No. 2 for Presidential Ticket ?

Texas rep. chef Edwards confirms to CNN that Barack Obama's presedential campaign has vetted him for the No. 2 spot on the Democratic Presidential ticket. Edwards also told CNN Obama has not spoken to him in recent days about his VP choice.

However, another CNN article points out that Sen. Barack Obama called some people on his shortlist for the vice presidential slot Thursday night to tell them he had not selected them as a running mate, a highly placed Democratic Party source said. The source did not say which people got the call. Rep. Chet Edwards said Friday that the campaign had vetted him but that he hasn't talked to Obama. Edwards, 56, is a nine-term congressman representing a central Texas district that includes President Bush's ranch in Crawford.

Earlier this month, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi touted Edwards as a dark horse contender for the No. 2 spot on the ticket. The presumptive Democratic nominee is working Friday in Chicago, Illinois, on his address to next week's Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. He has no public events scheduled Friday and will launch a string of rallies with his running mate on Saturday in Springfield, Illinois. Meanwhile, the top contenders for Obama's No. 2 spot are staying mum on the selection process as the vice presidential guessing game enters its final hours

Velocity 173 RG aircraft crashes in Las Vegas

An experimental aircraft crashed into a house shortly after takeoff Friday, killing the pilot and two people inside the home, authorities said.

The pilot of the home-built plane radioed that he was in trouble shortly after taking off from the North Las Vegas Airport, said Ian Gregor, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman in Hawthorne, Calif.
"He said he was unable to gain altitude and was going down," Gregor said.
Firefighters quickly doused an intense fire in the single-family home in a neighborhood southeast of a main runway at the airport.
The pilot and one resident of the house died in the 6:28 a.m. crash, and another person in the house died after being taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, said a deputy fire chief, Kevin Brame.
The names of the dead were not immediately released.
Gregor characterized the rear-propeller Velocity 173 RG aircraft as "experimental," and said it can be built from a kit. FAA records showed the aircraft was certified for flight in 2002, he said, and was owned by a Las Vegas resident. The name of the owner was not released.
Gregor said FAA and National Transportation Safety Board investigators were traveling to North Las Vegas to investigate the crash.
North Las Vegas Airport is the second-busiest airport in Nevada after McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, according to the airport's Web site. It's a busy hub for small planes and jets, and serves as a base for sightseeing flights to the Grand Canyon and other attractions.
