Sri Venkateswara (Tirupati) Temple

tirupati1 The ancient and sacred temple of Sri Venkateswara is located on the seventh peak, Venkatachala (Venkata Hill) of the Tirupati Hill, and lies on the southern banks of Sri Swami Pushkarini.

It is by the Lord’s presidency over Venkatachala, that He has received the appellation, Venkateswara (Lord of the Venkata Hill). He is also called the Lord of the Seven Hills.

The temple of Sri Venkateswara has acquired unique sanctity in Indian religious lore. The Sastras, Puranas, Sthala Mahatyams and Alwar hymns unequivocally declare that, in the Kali Yuga, one can attain mukti, only by worshipping Venkata Nayaka or Sri Venkateswara.

The benefits acquired by a piligrimage to Venkatachala are mentioned in the Rig Veda and Asthadasa Puranas. In these epics, Sri Venkateswara is described as the great bestower of boons. There are several legends associated with the manifestation of the Lord at Tirumala.

The temple has its origins in Vaishnavism, an ancient sect which advocates the principles of equality and love, and prohibits animal sacrifice.

The sanctum sanctorum which houses the awe-inspiring idol of the Lord of the Seven Hills is situated in the main temple complex of Tirumala.

Temple History

There is ample literary and epigraphic testimony to the antiquity of the temple of Lord Sri Venkateswara.

Sri KrishnadevarayaAll the great dynasties of rulers of the southern peninsula have paid homage to Lord Sri Venkateswara in this ancient shrine. The Pallavas of Kancheepuram (9th century AD), the Cholas of Thanjavur (a century later), the Pandyas of Madurai, and the kings and chieftains of Vijayanagar (14th - 15th century AD) were devotees of the Lord and they competed with one another in endowing the temple with rich offerings and contributions.

It was during the rule of the Vijayanagar dynasty that the contributions to the temple increased. Sri Krishnadevaraya had statues of himself and his consorts installed at the portals of the temple, and these statues can be seen to this day. There is also a statue of Venkatapati Raya in the main temple.

After the decline of the Vijayanagar dynasty, nobles and chieftains from all parts of the country continued to pay their homage and offer gifts to the temple. The Maratha general, Raghoji Bhonsle, visited the temple and set up a permanent endowment for the conduct of worship in the temple. He also presented valuable jewels to the Lord, including a large emerald which is still preserved in a box named after the General. Among the later rulers who have endowed large amounts are the rulers of Mysore and Gadwal.

After the fall of the Hindu kingdoms, the Muslim rulers of Karnataka and then the Britishers took over, and many of the temples came under their supervisory and protective control.

In 1843 AD, the East India Company divested itself of the direct management of non-Christian places of worship and native religious institutions. The administration of the shrine of Sri Venkateswara and a number of estates were then entrusted to Sri Seva Dossji of the Hatiramji Mutt at Tirumala, and the temple remained under the administration of the Mahants for nearly a century, till 1933 AD.

In 1933, the Madras Legislature passed a special act, which empowered the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams(TTD) Committee to control and administer a fixed group of temples in the Tirumala-Tirupati area, through a Commissioner appointed by the Government of Madras.

Ghajini to Release on Thursday, 25th Dec

Madras High Court allows Ghajini release

The eagerly awaited Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini will be released  onThursday, as scheduled, as the Madras High Court on Wednesday lifted a stay on its release.

A division bench of Justices V Dhanapalan and N Satyanarayanan allowed the release.

Justice PR Shivakumar had stayed the Hindi film's release Tuesday after A Chandrasekaran, the producer of the original Tamil film of the same name, filed a suit saying that the producers of the Hindi remake had "fabricated documents to claim ownership over the remake rights".

It is being said that the move to approach court was just a drama to provide additional publicity to the movie which is already set to make new records.

Movie Review – Ghajini

Ghajini has blockbuster written all over it

ghajiniMovie
Ghajini                                      Director A.R. Murugadoss                               Cast
Aamir Khan,Asin,Jiah Khan

The wait is finally over! An Aamir Khan film is nothing short of an event. The supremely talented actor acts in one film a year and no two films are ever identical in terms of plotline.

Ghajini, the Tamil version, has been a massive hit and so was its dubbed Telugu version. Will the Hindi adaptation live up to the humungous expectations? The hype is unmatched and you expect no less than a present-day masterpiece.

Now the good news: Ghajini demonstrates how strong film-making can enhance and elevate an already solid concept.

Ghajini is a revenge saga, one ingredient that has been the staple diet of Hindi films since time immemorial. It is a powerful film. It has the power to sweep you off your feet from the word 'go'. It has a riveting story, which has been told with flourish by director A.R. Murugadoss. And, of course, it has a knockout performance by Aamir Khan.

The flaws? Running time [almost 3 hours]? Not at all! There's so much happening in every scene and the screenplay is so gripping that you don't feel the need to look at the auditorium ceiling or at your watch at brief intervals. You aren't restless. As moviegoers, we've watched countless good versus evil fares over the years and although Ghajini belongs to the same family, not once does it take the beaten track. The story has been told differently and most importantly, the story offers so many twists-n-turns that you just can't guess what would unfold next.

Is it violent? It is, at times, but the violence here is justified. In fact, every time the protagonist bashes up the evil-doers, you clap and root for him. The climax is jaw-dropping -- dissimilar from the original, but it's an out of the world experience nonetheless.

To sum up, Ghajini is commercial Hindi cinema at its best. The film has 'Hit' written all over it. Let me put it this way: Cancel whatever you're doing today and go watch Ghajini instead.

Aamir Khan is suffering from acute short-term memory loss set off by the violent murder of his girlfriend Asin. He's got to work around this handicap, but with methodical and meticulous determination. Aamir etches a path of clues that lead him on his road.

To aid him in his quest, he carries around a sheaf of Polaroids and when he is really sure of a piece of information, he has it tattooed on his body, which stands in for the damaged part of his mind. His indelibly marked torso is the repository of his grief, his rage and his reason to go on living. Any more revelation would do gross injustice to the film and to its viewer.

First things first! Ghajini is not Memento. There're minor similarities, but Ghajini takes a completely different route to tell its story. Director A R Murugadoss tells this one differently. It starts off with what happens in the past, comes to the present-day, goes back in time again and returns to the contemporary again. This is a breathless, exciting story, heart-breaking and exhilarating at the same time.

Hindi movies have often depicted people suffering from amnesia/memory loss, but Ghajini is poles apart because the protagonist recalls events only for 15 minutes. The story is its USP, without a doubt. But what adds sheen and glory to the story is Aamir's portrayal of a man suffering from short-term memory loss.

Aamir hardly speaks. In fact, the leading lady [Asin] speaks more than Aamir in the film. But Aamir speaks volumes with his eyes, he conveys whatever has to be conveyed through his body language, he says it all with his facial expressions and that only makes Ghajini a memorable, never-seen-before experience.

Director A.R. Murugadoss deserves brownie points for not just coming up with an interesting story, but also presenting it [refreshingly] differently. The storyteller balances the light moments and the ones demanding intensity with expertise. There's dum in every sequence. Even if the director has to depict violence, he doesn't resort to blood-n-gore or knives-swords-pistols for effect.

A R Rahman's music is top notch. At least three numbers have the unmistakable stamp of a genius -- 'Guzarish', 'Behka' and 'Kaise Mujhe'. Ravi Chandran's cinematography is stunning. The film bears a stylish look all through. The action sequences are brilliantly executed. The Hindi moviegoers haven't seen such scenes ever.

Aamir delivers his career-best performance. In the first place, it requires courage and maturity to name the film after the villain. Knowing how egoistic our stars are, something like this is next to impossible in Hindi films.

A lot has been said and written about the Ghajini look -- Aamir's hairstyle and his dream physique. As far as his acting is concerned, he's natural as the tycoon, but like a wounded, ferocious tiger when he goes on an avenging spree. Without doubt, it's a concentrated, layered performance. He acts with his entire being. His body movement, the details of his performance, everything rings true. He is both vulnerable and hard. The pain in his face when he can't remember, is palpable. It's not only the plot that carries Ghajini. It's also the mood and the expression on Aamir's face that makes Ghajini a treat.

Asin is fabulous. To share the screen space with an actor of the stature of Aamir Khan and yet remain in your memory even after the show has ended is no cakewalk. She looks fresh and photogenic and acts her part brilliantly. Pradeep Rawat, the villain, is first-rate.

On the whole, Ghajini is a winner all the way. The film will set new records and has the merits to emerge one of the biggest hits of all times. The weekend business should be historic, the Week 1 business should be unparalleled, the lifetime gross should be amongst the biggest of all times. In short, Ghajini has 'Blockbuster' written all over it.

'Kappa Girl' detained by Shanghai police

Ever since the 12 minute long sex video of 'Kappa Girl' started taking the Chinese interwebs by storm last month, police have been hard at work trying to uncover the origins of the video in a bid to stop the video from spreading further online. Well, the Shanghai PSB has now cracked the mystery — the person responsible for spreading the video was none other than 'Kappa Girl' herself. And police have since detained the young woman surnamed Huang for spreading obscene material online.

As screwed up as it is, all the jigsaw puzzle pieces in this story fit together. Soon after she became an internet sensation, 'Kappa Girl' started a blog to capitalise on her new found fame and to turn it into cold hard cash. In one of her posts, she announced that her rates would be RMB20,000 for a bar appearance, RMB50,000 for an underwear modelling assignment, RMB30,000 for an exclusive interview. It makes sense then, that 'Kappa Girl' would supply her video to anyone who asked for it so she could continue to fuel her own fame.

Another man from Hubei province (would that be 'Kappa Girl's co-star we wonder?) has also been suspected of spreading the video and Hubei police are currently trying to track him down.

Ravi Shukla is Star Voice Of India

ravi_shukla Ravi Shukla from Delhi became the Amul Star Voice of India 2008, beating fellow contestant Saptaparna Chakraborty, the queen of Sikkim. Saptaparna was considered hot favorite to win the reality show, but Ravi shocked everyone with the final results.

Ravi got better of Saptaparna on the basis of voting, although the critics held Saptaparna much above Ravi for her singing talent and voice. No woman has been able to win any singing reality show on the senior level, be it Indian Idol, Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa or Amul Star Voice of India.

Saptaparna Chakraborty performed consistently, but could not get what she deserved because of the voting system. She hailed from the tiny north-eastern state, Sikkim, but proved much better than anyone else. Even though she lost in the final, she was the real winner. Ravi Shukla, a good singer, was ecstatic with joy after winning the coveted crown. He won a cash reward of Rs. 25 lakh and a car.

RAVI SHUKLA (23 yrs)
Place: Shanti Nagar, Liluah, Howrah - 711204
Tidbit: Ravi comes from a family that runs its own business. His parents have been the push behind his participating in ASVOI. Unlike most parents who want their kids to follow their path & continue the family business, Ravi's father wants to see him as a singer.

Chanda Kochhar new CEO of ICICI Bank

chanda ICICI Bank named joint managing director Chanda Kochhar as its new chief executive to lead the country's second-largest bank as it battles declining market share, souring bad debts and a tough global environment. Kochhar, 47, who joined ICICI as a management trainee in 1984, had been widely expected to succeed K.V. Kamath, who steps down next April after 13 years during which he spearheaded the bank's foray into insurance and asset management.

Shares in India's top private-sector lender, valued at $11 billion, have tumbled about 60 percent this year, hit by exposure overseas at a time of turmoil in global markets.

Kochhar takes over the CEO's job for five years from May, cementing her position as one of India's most powerful businesswomen. Kamath takes over as ICICI's non-executive chairman.

Kochhar faces an immediate task to arrest the bank's shrinking market share and restore confidence among its depositors and investors.

"ICICI is going through a change by shedding business with high risk and sacrificing growth," said Vaibhav Agarwal, a banking analyst at Angel Broking.

"The strategy is in place to clean the book within 18 months, she has to aggressively implement it."

Mumbai-based ICICI has the largest exposure among Indian banks to the global financial crisis and its shares have fallen 28 percent since mid-September when Lehman Brothers collapsed.

As the Lehman shock reverberated around global markets, both Kamath and Kochhar repeatedly assured investors and depositors that New York-listed ICICI was safe and well capitalised, and its stock has recovered 68 percent from its October low.

Analysts said ICICI needs to pare its overseas exposure, which makes up about 4 percent of its total balance sheet.

WIDELY RESPECTED

ICICI's senior officials and Kochhar's former colleagues say she has the capacity to take on tough tasks and lift employee morale as she is respected internally.

"She is one of the few persons who have exposure in all areas of the bank," said former colleague and chief executive at Edelweiss Capital Ltd

Kochhar joined the bank's board in 2001 and has led key businesses including corporate banking, project and infrastructure financing.

At the turn of the decade, she moved the bank into retail lending at a time the economy was taking off and creating demand for everything from homes to cars to household durables.

Retail loans eventually became the bank's largest portfolio reaching a staggering 67 percent of outstanding advances at one point and ICICI turned into a household name in India.

But a part of these loans have soured in the economic slowdown pushing up the bank's overall bad debts to 1.9 percent of net advances in September from 1.4 percent a year ago.

"The challenge for her would be the overall economic slowdown and building the deposit base at a time when all banks are aggressively competing for deposits," said Edelweiss' Shah.

ICICI's share of deposits and loans in the Indian banking system had fallen to 6.5 percent by September this year from 8.7 percent in March 2007, with a large part of the fall in 2008, according to data from three brokerages polled by Reuters.

Movie review- Dil Kabaddi

Dilkabaddi This happens in many urban homes. But to say that extra-marital affair is only an urban phenomenon is wrong.
Anyway, Dil Kabaddi is about two young urban couples whose conjugal lives have gone a bit awry and they begin to look out to have some flings on the side to keep the flame burning.
Samit (Irrfan Khan) finds his wife Mita (Soha Ali Khan) has got too absorbed in the concept of conventional marriage and their married life has become a routine of sort, a life where there is no scope for thrill and passion, but one which is fraught with marital discord and acrimony. So, Samit falls for Kaya (Payal Rohatgi), an aerobics instructor.
Rishi and Simi (Rahul Bose and Konkana Sen Sharma) are another disenchanted couple. But, unlike Mita, Simi is too passionately aggressive and possessive for Rishi's penchant for a carefree life. To Rishi, marriage means togetherness, not bondage. So, he unintentionally gets drawn to a free-spirited student of his (debutante Saba Azad), but succumbs to her passion nonetheless.
Well, Simi, too, is not bound by the marital vow either. She has a crush on young journalist Veer (Rahul Khanna) even as she thinks he would make a perfect husband to her friend, Mita.
The plot however begins to meander, leaving the audience confused and in the maze of relationships everything gets blurred and it is difficult to ascertain who is loyal to whom.
Perhaps, that is what director Anil Senior has intended the movie to be: funny and puzzling. After all, even though marriages are believed to be made in heaven, the gods do not ensure happiness in marriage.
The movie is funny, but much of the fun-filled incidents are borrowed from Woody Allen's rib-tickling mature movie Husbands and Wives. It is incoherent as there is no definite storyline. The fun emanates only from the forays of the characters and that is all about there is in the movie.
The only good thing about the movie is that it has a perfect cast, as all the lead actors fit the respective roles they play.
Irrfan Khan acts out his dalliance with his usual straight-faced style. Soha Ali Khan plays the role of a cantankerous wife without going overboard, Rahul Bose's sensitivity comes across right in keeping with his role, but one only wishes Payal Rohtagi could have done with screaming in lower decibel.

Movie review – Rab ne bana di Jodi

rabnebanadijodi What does a woman want Sigmund Freud had famously asked. A mousy office drone Surinder Sahini, played by Shah Rukh Khan, asks the same question in Aditya Chopra's new film Rab Ne Bana di Jodi.
Surinder's wife Tani, played by debutant Anushka Sharma, replies that a woman wants a man who loves her more than anything else in the world.
Surinder loves his wife so much that he is willing to transform himself into a fictional character Raj, who is hipper, cooler and most critically, makes Tani laugh. Slowly she finds herself falling in love with her husband in disguise.
In life, this would probably mean years of marriage counseling and therapy but since this is a Yash Raj film, everyone lives happily ever after.
Aaja Nachle, also produced by YRF, had a sub-plot of a painfully boring husband joining the theatre to impress his wife. Aditya, who returns to direction after eight years, has stretched that track into an entire film, except here theatre is replaced by a dance contest.
Rab Ne starts off promisingly. Both Aditya and Shah Rukh have a great affection for Surinder. He is the best-written and best enacted character in the film. Shah Rukh plays him with a loving tenderness. The film is interesting as long as we are watching this super geek who is too timid to even knock twice on his wife's door.
Unfortunately none of the other characters match up. Surinder's alter ego Raj, the loud-but-good-natured Jat, becomes boring after the initial laughs. And Tani herself is a mystery. The film begins with her losing her father and fiancée but she never mentions them again. Tani is willing to leave Surinder but then suddenly, after a visit to the Golden Temple, she starts to see the goodness in her husband. Newcomer Anushka is confident but she isn't sparkling enough to dazzle you so that you can bypass these holes in the character.
The premise of Rab Ne is illogical but even if you are willing to overlook the fact that Tani fails to recognise her own husband because he loses his moustache and gels his hair, the film is a frustrating experience.
Sporadic scenes play out nicely and Shah Rukh Khan works every acting muscle to bring conviction to this story but the overwhelming emotional inconsistency fractures the film.
As events unfold, you are constantly asking: why is this happening. Eventually then, Rab Ne is a disappointment. See it only for Surinder and what Shah Rukh does with him.

    MTNL Soft-Launches 3G in Delhi

mtnl3g After much postponement, India is finally on the 3G map of the world as Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) kick-started 3G services in Delhi today.
The state-owned telecom operator even has a name for the new service, and it's not mere 'MTNL 3G.' They've christened it as  MTNL 3G Jadoo.

This being a soft-launch of 3G Jadoo, initially, only some parts of Delhi would have access to the service. Currently, the areas being covered are: Connaught Place, Sanchar Bhawan, Rajaji Marg, India Gate, Pragati Maidan, Delhi Gate, and Minto Road.
So, if you have a phone that supports 3G, and needless to say, an MTNL connection with GPRS activation, take a walk around the areas listed and see if the 'E' or 'G' (that denotes connectivity) on your phone turns to 3.5G!
In case you're curious to know about the speeds being offered, connect your phone to your notebook to find out.
MTNL is not charging extra for the service introduced today as it wants its customers to get a feel of 3G's capabilities. Eventually, there will be a commercial tariff plan announced, and the registration will start after the commercial launch -- a couple of months from now.
Mumbai too will have a similar soft-launch for MTNL's 3G services two months hence, says J. Gopalan, executive director, MTNL (Mumbai).
He adds, "The first phase would include trial services to be offered in areas between the Airport and Prabhadevi. The second phase would include South Bombay."
State-owned telecom operators MTNL and BSNL have the first-mover advantage to offer 3G services in India. With Delhi services commencing today, Mumbai will follow suit in two months' time. Chennai too will get to experience 3G services in January 2009 through BSNL.
Sooner or later (MTNL plans to offer 3G services across India by mid-2009), our countrymen will be able to surf the internet with speeds up to 2Mbps on their smart phones.
MTNL will be installing 15 lakh 3G lines in the first phase of its 3G roll-out in Mumbai and Delhi (which currently have 35 lakh existing mobile lines).

Ashok Chavan to be new Maharashtra CM

ashokchavan Ashok Chavan has been appointed as chief minister of Maharashtra. A formal announcement is likely to be made later tonight.

Chavan takes over from Vilasrao Deshmukh who resigned yesterday in the wake of terrorist attacks last week. Deshmukh also drew widespread criticism after he visited the ravaged Taj Mahal Hotel — one of the sites of the attacks — with actor-son Riteish Deshmukh and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma in tow.

Chavan pipped other contenders Sushil Kumar Shinde, Narayan Rane and Prithviraj Chavan for the top job. He was the industry minister in Vilasrao Deshmukh's cabinet. An MLA from Nanded, Chavan is the son of the late SB Chavan, who was twice Maharashtra's chief minister.
